I am not a Freudian, but Sigma Freud theories of sexual identify does come to mind when thinking about society’s obsession with sex. Psychology professionals revealed that sex can be categories as an addiction. In extreme cases people are labeled as sex addicts because they cannot control their natural sexual urges. But when you think about how bombarded we are with sex through images in billboards, movies, internet, music videos, art, books, magazines, and commercials, it is possible to understand how people can over indulge or become “addicted.” Sex is also portrayed as a topic of sensitivity, scandal, and business. For example, parent(s) find the topic of sex sensitive when talking to their children; the media expose peoples’ private sex lives in news stories of social scandal; and advertisers find sex effective in appealing to buyers when promoting products. As a society it is our responsibility to control what we let enter how minds. However, this is almost impossible considering and how bombarded we are by the advancements of technology. This is an indication that we need to guard our minds and avoid as much of the media as possible.
Naturally sex is a process involved in reproduction,
emotionally sex an expression of love, desire, and devotion, and physically sex
is a form of pleasure. In other words, in our minds we attach our own meanings
to sex. The meanings we attach to sex is significantly influenced by the media,
as a result, some children and teenagers are mislead and misinformed. Some
children and teenagers do not understand the value and importance of their
bodies and the public examples set before them falls short of good morals and
ethics. As a whole, society’s obsession with sex does trickle down to the younger
generations.
Sex along with gender, race, ethnicity, status, politics,
culture, and religion all seem to intertwine in topics of debate and social
disturbance. The reason for this is simple, sex along with gender, race, ethnicity, status, politics, culture, and religion are
the human elements which sets us apart as a society. The human species like any
other species including plants and animal do vary. The most common example of
natural variation is the many beautiful colors of corn. In contrast, we are not
all created exactly alike, we are all unique and complex beings.
In a perfect world sex would be a private relationship
between two consenting adults or a topic of discussion for parental guidance
and preparation into adulthood. Instead sex is used inappropriately in main
stream media and exposed to the world. It is essential to develop a strong sense
of awareness in order to recognize and eliminate useless information that
bombards our minds. This involves understanding the tactics of subliminal
messaging in the media. However, it is more important to spend more time getting
back to the basics of life. We are so far removed that some children do not
know how to play without technology.
