Originally in the 50’s subliminal messages were perceive as negative and those in authority first seek to ban the technique from advertizing; today over 50 years later, without subliminal messages it is difficult if not impossible to generate an audience or gain public attention in the media. I assume somewhere in the middle, while those involved in the controversy of subliminal messages argued back and forth about the insignificance and the significance of subliminal messages, the advancement of subliminal messages in the media was also taking place. Subliminal messages are now revealed in the forefront of the media, while the controversy surrounding subliminal messages continue.

Subliminal messages have always been used in the media through the images of words and pictures; however, an isolated incident in a movie theater advertising popcorn lead to the exposure of how significant subliminal messages really was. Once discovered, the use of subliminal message fell in the hands of those who would financially benefit from the swaying of public attention, resulting in certain public actions or behaviors. This has lead to the now concern and controversy of the effects of the media on human behavior, which is one of the original concerns of subliminal messages.

The fact of the matter is subliminal messages was always in the forefront of the media, however, the technique was not recognized and revealed to the public until the 50’s. Whether recognized or not recognized, the effects of the media on human behavior is happening through subliminal messages.
